So, if you're wondering where I've been...I've been working! On art of course, all sorts...playing with watercolor, oil pastels and most recently...drawing! On Monday I started sketching again...now every day I do a warm up sketch and this week I've been working on a portrait of my youngest son. The portrait is not yet complete, but I thought I'd pop in and let you see my last 3 sketch/drawings. It has been awhile since I really focused on my drawing skills and I must admit that I'm truly enjoying my drawing time. Yes I'm still out photographing constantly, but this girl is no one trick pony. Art, its all I know, its who I am and it makes me happier than anything else possibly could!
Anything art related: photography, digital art, drawings, paintings, sculptures...this year I've begun a 365 series with journal/narrative blogs to walk you through the journey. I hope you enjoy the writings as well as the images!

Celebrating a little success today! I had my first completely essay exam a week or two ago in my 500 level art history course which is on the development of sound in narrative film...my first 500 level art history course...which if you're in college/have been to college, than you know these classes are a bit tougher than usual. I was seriously nervous about this exam, just not knowing what to expect from the teacher or how he graded his written exams...3 questions, 20 minute limits for each and my entire grade rests on 3 of this type of exam...meaning no papers or homework...just exam scores...which in itself can be quite intimidating. Typically the Professors are known to hand papers back from the highest to lowest scores achieved. As exams were being handed back...I watched the pile dwindle to a mere 5 test packets...Oh God...I thought I had failed! When he got to those last five, he announced that though there were other good grades in the class...those last 5 were the only A's! Yes...one of them was mine! So I'm celebrating my success tonight....I always work hard at everything I do...feeling like somehow I have more to prove than the others considering I'm old enough to be any one of their Mother's! Today felt GREAT! Out of a class of over 60 students, I received one of the top grades in that class...and was asked to read one of my answers aloud so that others could hear what a 'good' essay should sound like! Holy crap! Yes...today...no matter what else has or will happen...has been a really good day!

Day 24: 365 self-portraits by Susan Komer "home school"

For me to be able to finish my own education, I needed to move my family to the 'big city' where an education for my children would not quite have been all we'd have desired. To make it all work, I decided to home school the kids...not a choice made lightly! So when I finish my own day of classes, I come home and do theirs...and THEN I get to do my own homework. We tried the hour commute for nearly 3 months and it just wasn't happening...so now...though I have more time and easier lab & studio access...my life is always school...either my own or theirs. For me, my own education...a dream I've held onto for over 20 years...makes this all worth it! One day, I'll be finished...something I'm doing for myself but will hopefully be a benefit to us all...So when I'm feeling totally beat...I keep my eye on the light at the end of the tunnel...and remember that the sacrifices I'm making now serve a greater purpose...I HOPE!
